South Africa Travel

The dainty springbok can be found all over in the dry savannah of southern Africa. One can often see them when driving through the Karoo. The biggest population, however, is found in the Kalahari, where they are the most widely spread antelope species. If their food contains at least 10 per cent water, they can cope without drinking.

Springbok antelopes live in larger groups and during the summer months huge herds concentrate in the dry riverbeds of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Springboks are fast sprinters. They can reach a speed of 80 km/h and jump more than 10 metres wide. A very interesting jumping behaviour can be observed during and after the rare rainfalls. Apparently out of the pure joy of living, the animals jump up and down like bouncing balls, stretching their front and rear legs simultaneously and bending their heads down.

Ground Squirrels

Ground squirrels mainly occur in the dry, semi-desert regions of southern Africa, especially in the Kalahari. These cute animals are identifiable by their white stripes along the sides, the missing external ear and the long, bushy tail, which offers them shade.

The rodents differ from the European squirrel in that they don't climb trees, but live on the ground and in their widespread underground caves. They feed on grass seeds, leaves and roots. Ground squirrels are constant companions in the rest camps of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Because they are often fed by visitors, they can become a nuisance.

Tours and travel in South Africa, consider the options before you commit yourself,...

Proper planning and preparation are the key words. Start off with the most important step and that is to orientate yourself, take stock of all the options and find direction as to the choices that are to be made. Find out and determine at the same time what your likes and dislikes are, your tastes and preferences.

Orientating yourself and taking stock of the tour options available, is a two-sided affair. It's very important that you take into account your own personal needs and circumstances, like for instance physical limitations, health and fitness condition and special diets to name but a few.

Consider the things that you are accustomed to and whether they are available where you are going. Decide what level of luxury and comfort you want with regard to accommodation, travelling and food.

Most people have one or more special interests in life. For some that could be a hobby like photography, collecting things, history, culture and heritage, food and wine, to name but a few. Others may have a passion for a particular sport or activity such as golfing, bird watching, horse riding, scuba diving, hiking etc. Maybe you just have a liking for sightseeing, shopping or lazing on the beach.

Whichever it is, you may want your special interest or hobby to be part of your South Africa tour. Investigate and assess the possibilities when looking at the various choices. There is bound to be a combination that will make your tour extra special.

You should be aware of the impact that your perceptions of South Africa will have on your South Africa tour experience. Ask yourself why you want to visit our country. Try and discover which aspects of a tour appeal to you and which do not.

For instance if you are very sensitive, you might not enjoy visiting a poor township community, while on the other hand it might just inspire you to see how that community copes with its situation. Many people enjoy the company of a tour group around them, whilst others prefer a more private small-group environment. These are important things to consider when looking at the options and choices available.
